Yun’s journal, Day 816

I’ve been gone away from Pinnacle for ten days now. I don’t know if I want to go back.

Despite all the bad things in Old Haven and the disaster of my research there, I went with Rodrigo, and I will treasure that time with him.

But Rodrigo is back to being busy again. Perhaps that is why I should be in Pinnacle. He has no time for me, and Boar does.

Boar came down to Lakeside this morning to fetch me. He’s going to stay here for a bit. Impi came with him.

In fact, everyone is down here right now. I even talked with Omega for a little bit. But Rodrigo says he is acting oddly sometimes. He will just stand around without moving for hours. He comes to dinner, not that he eats anything, and then he just sits there, not moving or talking, even if someone says something to him.

But it is good to be back in Lakeside, for now.

A few days ago, we were all excited to see each other and know everyone was safe. But now I feel like I’ve lost my future. I’ve always relied on Rodrigo to find out what our purpose here was. Now even he is not sure we have one. He didn’t say that, but I can tell it’s on his mind.

He’s in one of his quiet moods. It’s weird, because nobody is saying much to each other about what they each discovered. I think they want to talk things over with Rodrigo first.

There had been many smiles and grateful greetings during the successful return of all the Dusties to Lakeside, but Rodrigo knew that their disturbing discoveries in Old Haven would quickly unsettle his friends. So, after they had all given quick versions of their stories, Rodrigo isolated himself, retreating to the ledge overlooking Vida Lake, and asked Rip to send for the others, one at a time.

Catherine came first, sitting down next to him on the ledge and flipping small stones into the water, watching the bigger fish approach the ripples in lazy interest. She showed him the same relaxed interest, as if she believed he intended to claim her someday, and she gave him a detailed account of their entry into Lord Grager’s secret lair.

In the end, however, it was mostly unhelpful, adding up to a strangely dug tunnel, papers burned by unknown invaders, and a mysterious second occupant of the secret headquarters. After playfully fussing over the slowly fading dark mark on Rodrigo’s side where the ghast had touched him, Catherine gave him a kiss on the cheek and left.

Scarlet came next, delivering his dire news about the shocking evils of Odami and Paddington with a whispered voice. Rodrigo thought of immediate use for the damning information, however, and resolved to visit Pashen as soon as practical.

When Scarlet rose to leave, they discovered Phoebe ascending the steps.

“I’m terribly sorry for interrupting, but I needed to speak to both of you, alone.”

They offered her a dry place on the stone floor, but she chose to pace.
